What are Shopmobility Schemes?

Shopmobility schemes lend manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs and powered scooters to members of the public with limited mobility, to let them shop and to visit leisure and commercial facilities within an area.

Shopmobility schemes actively support inclusion of people with disabilities (permanent or temporary), and  encourage independence. They do this  through the supply of mobility equipment such as scooters, wheelchairs and power chairs, which promote equality of access.

The network of schemes throughout the UK gives people the confidence to travel, safe in the knowledge that friendly help and assistance will be available at the end of their journey. Click here to go to the national Shopmobility site.

Who can use Shopmobility?

Shopmobility is for anyone, young or old, whether their disability is temporary or permanent.

It's available for people with injuries, or long- or short-term disabilities – anyone who needs help with mobility.  Shopmobility is about the freedom to get around.  You don't need to be registered as disabled to use it.

It's not just for shopping - it can help you visit local beauty spots and attractions - think about going out along the pier at Swanage, or from the car park down to the shore at Lulworth Cove. There is a national website being developed to provide a nationwide database of walks suitable for wheelchair users - click here to see it.

It's for local people and visitors alike. If you're planning a visit to the area talk to us before you arrive (or get your hotel, B&B or campsite to talk to us for you); we'll try to have a scooter or wheelchair delivered to where you're staying before you arrive, and collect it after you've left. Many of our scooters can easily be carried in a car boot, and even if you already have your own wheelchair, you might find it easier to hire from us and save luggage space on the journey.

Where are you?

We're based at our Mobility Centre in St John's Hill, just off South Street, in Wareham. To see a map, click here
